Condensed Findings from Questionnaire

Why do you choose to watch French films rather than just Hollywood/British productions?
• More original, visually more interesting
• Different cultural, social and political views/conventions
• It would be limiting to only watch American/British films.

Is there anything you like about French films that you expect all of them to have?
• French actors
• Subtitles rather than dubbing (However there would likely be others who would prefer a dubbed film to reading subtitles)
• Quirky humour

Where did you watch the film and why did you watch it there/on that format?
• At home after recommendation
• With friend after being recommended it

What did you like about the story?
• It was quirky, funny and original
• Nice location
• It was more personal and intimate than Hollywood often is
• Style of filming

What did you like about the characters?
• True to life but still intriguing
• Quirky and unusual
• Unpredictable
• Amusing
• Their attitudes

• Meeting Amelie and her family (the repetition, fun and unusual)
• The kissing at the end (unconventional but sweet)
• Reasons why Nino might not have got the letter (very funny)
• Making fun of grocer by setting clock early etc.(Funny and well presented)

• At home after recommendation

What did you like about the story?
• A personal insight into political situation didn’t know about
• Original visual style
• Mix of tragedy and comedy
• That it was one that wouldn’t be found in Hollywood

What did you like about the characters?
• Believable
• Could relate to them

• The censoring of the Birth of Venus
• The impression of the restrictions on life portrayal throughout
• Finding out what happens to virgin women sentenced to death – shocking, brings back how serious the situation is amongst the comedy

• At home after being lent it by friend
• At home with Family
• At cinema

What did you like about the story?
• Unusual and original
• Visually stunning
• Never really knowing whether something is real or a dream (fragmented narrative)
• Deeper ideas and morals present

What did you like about the characters?
• The naivety of the main character
• Their normal reactions to bizarre situations
• Understated support cast played their characters really well

• All the dream sequences – Well made and visually arresting
